The Chairman of the Wireless & Internet Service Providers Association of Pakistan (WISPAP), Shahzad Arshad, has voiced serious concerns about the persistent internet disruptions affecting the country. In a statement released on Tuesday, Arshad highlighted the significant challenges that slow internet speeds have posed to Pakistan’s economy and society over the past several weeks.
Impact on Economy and Society
According to Arshad, both mobile and wireline networks have been plagued by slow internet speeds, which have disrupted various sectors, including businesses, education, and essential services. “The prolonged nature of these issues is deeply concerning,” Arshad stated. He emphasized that the disruptions have had widespread adverse effects, particularly on freelancers, students, and service providers, all of whom rely heavily on stable internet connections.
Government’s Response and Concerns
The government has attributed the slowdown to the increased use of Virtual Private Networks (VPNs) by the public. However, this explanation has left many stakeholders seeking further clarification. While the government has reassured citizens that no firewall or filtration systems have been installed at international gateways, concerns remain. Arshad called for a transparent discussion to fully understand and resolve these disruptions.
WISPAP’s Recommendations
WISPAP acknowledges the government’s responsibility to address security concerns. However, if filtration systems are deemed necessary, the association recommends establishing a whitelist of essential websites. This list should include freelancing platforms, e-marketplaces, and other digital services that are crucial for Pakistan’s digital workforce. “This approach would support our digital workforce while addressing broader security objectives,” Arshad explained.
Widespread Impact of Internet Issues
The current internet disruptions have had far-reaching effects. Freelancers, particularly those working with international clients via platforms like Fiverr, are facing significant difficulties in maintaining their livelihoods. Additionally, students who have relied on online education since the COVID-19 pandemic are experiencing disruptions to their studies. Essential service providers, such as those in food delivery, ride-hailing, and cargo services, are also struggling with operational challenges due to unreliable internet connections.
Call for Government Action
While there has been some improvement in internet speeds, the situation remains unresolved. Arshad stressed that consistent and reliable internet access is vital for Pakistan’s progress, especially as the country aims to lead in digital literacy and technological innovation. “We urge the government to prioritize resolving these issues to ensure Pakistan remains on track to becoming a leading digital economy,” he said. WISPAP remains committed to collaborating with all stakeholders to achieve this goal.
