In a concerning development, the Federal Investigation Agency’s (FIA) Cybercrime Wing has reported more than 1,400 cases of WhatsApp account hacks over the past few months, with officials indicating that the real number of affected accounts could be even higher.
Since July 1, a total of 1,426 formal complaints regarding hacked WhatsApp accounts have been filed with the Cybercrime Wing. However, the FIA has noted that many victims choose not to report incidents, suggesting that the actual number of compromised accounts could significantly exceed the reported cases.
According to FIA data, out of the 1,426 registered cases, 549 accounts have been successfully restored. The agency is actively working on 877 remaining complaints, with 817 cases still under verification. Additionally, 20 unresolved cases have been escalated for formal inquiries, reflecting the agency’s commitment to addressing severe cybersecurity threats.
In a report submitted to the Senate, the FIA highlighted that 40 complaints have yet to see any response or progress report. The Cybercrime Wing has called on WhatsApp users to adopt stronger security measures to protect their accounts and avoid falling victim to similar attacks.
The FIA’s Cybercrime Wing remains focused on bolstering digital safety measures and urges the public to report incidents to enable better tracking and response in combating cyber threats.
