Apple has officially announced the iPhone 16, featuring a fresh design and advanced capabilities powered by the new Apple Intelligence system. The iPhone 16 introduces vertically stacked camera lenses, enabling spatial video recording, a significant upgrade to its multimedia features.
The iPhone 16 will be available in five striking colors: ultramarine, teal, pink, black, and white. While a white variant was rumored, it wasn’t shown in the initial leaks.
New Durable Design with Ceramic Shield
Apple has enhanced the durability of the iPhone 16 by introducing a new Ceramic Shield material for the display, which is 50% tougher than previous models. This provides improved protection against drops and scratches. The screen sizes remain the same as the iPhone 15 series, with the iPhone 16 featuring a 6.1-inch display and the iPhone 16 Plus offering a larger 6.7-inch screen.
Introducing the Camera Control Button
One of the standout features of the iPhone 16 is the long-rumored Capture button, now officially named the Camera Control button. This button allows users to adjust camera settings with a simple finger slide, offering greater flexibility for photography and video recording.
Powered by the A18 Chip
Under the hood, the iPhone 16 is powered by the brand-new A18 chip, featuring a 16-core neural engine that’s twice as fast for machine learning tasks. This new chip delivers 30% faster CPU performance compared to the A16 Bionic chip in the iPhone 15. Additionally, the A18 chip provides 17% more system memory bandwidth, making it highly efficient for Apple Intelligence and on-device AI tasks.
The GPU has also been upgraded with five cores, making it 40% faster and 35% more power-efficient than the previous generation, promising better graphics performance for gaming and other intensive applications.
Enhanced AI with Apple Intelligence
Apple continues its push into AI with Apple Intelligence, which is integrated into various iPhone functions, including messaging and photos. The company has emphasized privacy with Private Cloud Compute, ensuring AI tasks requiring significant processing are done in Apple’s data centers without compromising user privacy.
AI Writing Tools and Siri Enhancements
In a move inspired by features seen in Samsung Galaxy and Google Pixel devices, the iPhone 16 introduces AI writing tools, helping users with text summaries, emoji and image generation, and more. These tools are integrated across apps, including Mail, where users will now receive email summaries instead of just the first few lines of a message.

Siri has also been updated, with improved speech recognition and the ability to understand on-screen context, allowing for more seamless interactions, such as playing music with simple voice commands based on recent conversations.
Camera and Spatial Video Recording
The iPhone 16 retains the same main camera setup but introduces a new 12MP ultrawide sensor for better low-light performance. Both the iPhone 16 and iPhone 16 Plus will now support spatial video recording, expanding possibilities for video content creators.
Enhanced Gaming Capabilities
With the powerful A18 chip, the iPhone 16 is equipped to handle AAA games, which were previously only available on the iPhone 15 Pro models. This upgrade promises an immersive gaming experience, combined with an increased battery size, although Apple has not yet revealed specific battery details.
Pricing and Availability
The iPhone 16 will start at $799, while the iPhone 16 Plus will be priced at $899. Apple is offering up to $800 off for trade-ins, making the upgrade more affordable. While no official release date has been provided, pre-orders to begin September 13, with shipping likely starting on September 20.
